Need to know
- We rated 16 New Jersey solar companies on licensing, warranties, local presence, track record and options. The top three: Solar Energy World (5, Top-rated), Impact Solar (5, Top-rated) and Solar Me (5, Top-rated).
- PSE&G, JCP&L, Atlantic City Electric and Rockland Electric credit each exported kWh at the full retail rate. Credits left after your 12-month period are paid at the lower wholesale value. The BPU is reviewing the rule for new customers but has set no change date.
- A residential solar company needs an active Home Improvement Contractor registration (13VH) and an Electrical Business Permit (34EB). Both are on the state’s free license search, and the SREC-II goes to whoever owns the system.
What solar costs in New Jersey
Price before incentives. Solar equipment is exempt from the 6.625% sales tax, and there is no federal credit for systems you own. The range is EcoGen's quote band of plus or minus 12% around $2.92 per watt. Batteries and roof work cost extra. Compare each quote’s price per watt with these numbers.

Solar incentives, tax breaks and rebates in New Jersey
- SREC-II (SuSI / ADI)
- Each 1,000 kWh your panels make earns one SREC-II worth $77 for 15 years, for registrations received on or after July 27, 2026 ($85 before). The payment goes to the system owner.
- Program capacity
- The current round for homes holds 300 MW, first come, first served. It closes on June 1, 2027, or sooner if it fills.
- Net metering
- PSE&G, JCP&L, Atlantic City Electric and Rockland Electric credit each exported kWh at the full retail rate. Credits left after 12 months are paid at the lower wholesale value.
- Taxes
- No 6.625% sales tax on solar equipment (Form ST-4). The value solar adds to your home is exempt from property tax once you file Form CRES.
- Battery programs
- PSE&G offers a rebate of up to $5,000 on a new home battery. JCP&L pays $100 per kW of battery output during summer peak events.
- Federal credit
- The federal tax credit is $0 for systems installed after December 31, 2025. New Jersey has no state income tax credit for solar.

What to check with your utility
PSE&G
- Full retail credit for exported power under the state's 1:1 net metering rule.
- Supply rate of 10.938¢ per kWh from the February 2026 auction, effective June 1, 2026.
- Battery rebate of up to $5,000 for a purchased battery of at least 8.5 kW from a participating contractor. Places are limited.
JCP&L
- Full retail credit for exported power; leftover credits settle once every 12 months at wholesale value.
- Supply rate of 11.327¢ per kWh from the February 2026 auction.
- Pays $100 per kW of average battery output in summer peak events; JCP&L says the average is $360 a summer.
Atlantic City Electric
- Full retail credit for exported power under the state's net metering rule.
- Supply rate of 11.275¢ per kWh from the February 2026 auction.
- No battery payment is listed on EcoGen's incentives page. Ask the utility before you count on one.
Rockland Electric
- Full retail credit for exported power under the state's net metering rule.
- Supply rate of 12.057¢ per kWh from the February 2026 auction.
- No battery payment is listed on EcoGen's incentives page.
Municipal utilities (for example Vineland)
- City-owned utilities set their own rules and are outside state net metering.
- Vineland caps new home solar at 5 kW-AC and pays nothing for extra power. Ask in writing before you sign.
Check the company and its warranty
Three names can appear in one solar deal: the company that sells, the company that signs the contract and the licensed people who do the work. Check that they fit together.
- Contract company: look up its license on the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs: Home Improvement Contractor registration (a 13VH number) and, from the Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors, an Electrical Business Permit (a 34EB number).. The name must match your contract.
- Electrical connection: EcoGen's New Jersey cost guide says the state requires both a New Jersey electrical contractor license and a Home Improvement Contractor registration for residential solar, so the company or its named subcontractor must hold an active electrical business permit (https://ecogenamerica.com/cost-of-solar-panels/new-jersey/). Ask who does it.
- Warranty documents: ask for the workmanship warranty, the roof coverage terms and each equipment warranty before you sign.

Each company gets up to 100 points from facts anyone can check: its own website and New Jersey’s public license records, read October 14, 2026. Facts a company does not publish earn no points. No company pays for its rating, and we do not use customer star reviews.
- Licensing (30 points): an active state license, a licensed electrician and license numbers printed on its website.
- Warranty protection (35 points): workmanship warranty length, roof-penetration coverage in writing and any production guarantee.
- Local presence (15 points): an office in New Jersey and New Jersey named as a service area.
- Track record (10 points): years installing solar.
- Options (10 points): batteries and the number of ways to pay.
Stars: 85 points or more is 5 (Top-rated), 72 is 4.5 (Excellent), 60 is 4 (Very good), 45 is 3.5 (Good), below 45 is 3 (Average). We did not inspect installations, collect customer quotes or test customer service.
New Jersey solar company FAQs
How do I check a New Jersey solar installer's license?
Search the company on the Division of Consumer Affairs license search at newjersey.mylicense.com. A home improvement contractor registration starts with 13VH and an electrical business permit with 34EB. EcoGen’s cost guide says residential solar needs both, so ask for both numbers and check that they are active.
Does New Jersey still have full net metering?
Yes. PSE&G, JCP&L, Atlantic City Electric and Rockland Electric credit each exported kWh at the full retail rate. Credits roll forward month to month, and any left after 12 months are paid at the lower wholesale value. The BPU opened a review in November 2024 but has set no change date.
How much is an SREC-II worth?
A home system earns one SREC-II for every 1,000 kWh it makes. The price is $77 for registrations received on or after July 27, 2026, fixed for 15 years. Registrations before that date got $85. The payment goes to the system owner, so on a lease or PPA the company usually keeps it.
Is there a New Jersey solar tax credit?
No. New Jersey has no state income tax credit for solar, and the federal homeowner credit is $0 for systems installed after December 31, 2025. Solar equipment is free of the 6.625% sales tax, and the value solar adds to your home is exempt from property tax once you file Form CRES.
