Florida still runs full retail net metering, and grid power is getting pricier fast: FPL's four-year rate settlement took effect January 1, and Tampa Electric opened the year with a 6% increase. The sun does its part here. What decides your outcome is sizing below the 10 kW insurance line, wind-zone-rated hardware, and a quote that survives scrutiny. EcoGen America checks all three.

Florida still runs full retail net metering, and grid power is getting pricier fast: FPL’s four-year rate settlement took effect January 1, and Tampa Electric opened the year with a 6% increase.
The sun does its part here, and installs are cheap by national standards at $2.20 to $2.80 per watt. What decides your outcome is the details.
Three of them matter most: sizing below the 10 kW insurance line, wind-zone-rated mounting that survives a hurricane inspection, and a quote that stands up to scrutiny.
EcoGen America checks all three before you sign, and matches you with installers whose own paperwork shows they build for Florida wind.
Florida mounting is an engineering question. We look for wind-rating specifications on the proposal, not promises in the pitch.
Built-in checks for the 10 kW insurance threshold, net metering credit math, and paybacks that reflect this year's FPL and Tampa Electric rates.
We track FPL's rate settlement, Tampa Electric and Duke increases, and any legislative movement on Florida's net metering statute.

Florida install prices typically run $2.20 to $2.80 per watt cash, putting a standard 8 to 10 kW system between $18,000 and $28,000 before incentives. County permitting, roof type and utility territory move the number; the 6% sales tax exemption and the 100% property tax exemption soften it.
The federal 30% credit expired December 31, 2025, and Florida has no state income tax credit to replace it. A purchased 8 kW system at roughly $20,000 pays back in 10 to 13 years at current rates. Full math in our Florida cost guide.

Florida Contract Checks
Florida quotes often bury utility assumptions and permitting costs in the small print. Before you compare prices, check that these four things are clearly written.
Florida permit and interconnection fees vary by county and are often bundled into a single system price.
Florida credits excess solar at the full retail rate under PSC Rule 25-6.065, and no step-down is scheduled. The 2022 bill that would have phased it down was vetoed. Treat any estimate built on a different future credit rate as a number to ask about.
Standard workmanship warranties often exclude storm and wind damage. In Florida, that's a significant gap.
Some Florida insurers require disclosure before solar installation. Faulty workmanship claims are excluded from home insurance and fall back on the installer's warranty.
Before you sign, run these checks on any Florida quote. If a contract can't answer, walk away.

Tier 1 systems at 10 kW AC or less interconnect with no fee and no insurance requirement. Tier 2 systems above that owe a $400 application fee and $1 million in liability insurance for the life of the system, typically $200 to $500 a year. A smart design stays just under the line.
FPL and other utilities pay out unused annual credits in cash at 3 to 4¢/kWh, not the retail rate. Oversizing donates the surplus back to the utility, so a well-sized system matters more in Florida than in most states.
Miami-Dade and Broward require Miami-Dade NOA-approved racking. If your quote doesn't reference wind zone compliance, ask why.
Florida law protects your right to install solar. HOAs can regulate appearance but cannot block installation. Get written approval before signing an installer contract to avoid delays.
The sun is not the constraint in Florida; the insurance market and the paperwork are. These are the homes where waiting, or passing, is the right call.
What cannot stop you: your HOA. Florida statute protects the right to install solar; associations may weigh in on placement aesthetics but cannot block a code-compliant system. And with the federal credit gone since December 31, 2025, timing pressure is off; get the roof and the sizing right first. Full numbers in our Florida worth-it breakdown.

Yes. FPL, Duke and Tampa Electric credit excess production at the full retail rate, and unused credits roll over monthly. The 2022 attempt to phase it down was vetoed and no step-down is scheduled.
The nuance is the year-end payout: surplus left each year cashes out at 3 to 4¢/kWh, which is why sizing to your actual usage matters more than maxing the roof.
Two ways. Miami-Dade and Broward require NOA-approved racking, and quotes must name the wind-zone spec. And your homeowner policy is now part of the math: some carriers require roof replacement before approving panels, and premiums can move after installation.
Call your insurer before you sign, and get the answers in writing.
Plan on 6 to 12 weeks from contract to permission to operate, with county permitting and utility interconnection as the variable stretches. Florida’s fast-track permitting jurisdictions run quicker.
Ask for the quoted permission-to-operate date in writing and what happens if interconnection runs past it.
For savings, grid-tied is enough: full retail net metering means the grid already banks your surplus at the billed rate. A battery earns little on rate arbitrage here.
For hurricane-season backup, a battery is the right reason to buy one. Just price it as resilience, not as an investment that pays for itself.
