Need to know
- We rated 16 New York solar companies on licensing, warranties, local presence, track record and options. The top three: Brooklyn SolarWorks (4.5, Excellent), SUNation Energy (4.5, Excellent) and Trinity Solar (4, Very good).
- Con Edison, National Grid and the other large utilities credit each exported kWh against later bills, but every system connected since 2022 pays a monthly charge of $0.97 to $1.67 per kW. Ask for it as a line in the savings estimate.
- New York has no state contractor or electrical license. Ask for the NY-Sun participation and the local license that covers your address, such as NYC DCWP or a Suffolk or Nassau home improvement license.
What solar costs in New York
No federal credit for systems you own in 2026. The state credit is 25% up to $5,000 and also applies to leases and PPAs of 10 years or more. The range is EcoGen's price range for owned 6 kW to 12 kW systems, before incentives. Batteries and roof work cost extra. Compare each quote’s price per watt with these numbers.

Solar incentives, tax breaks and rebates in New York
- State tax credit
- 25% of what you pay for a system on your main home, up to $5,000, claimed on Form IT-255; unused credit carries forward 5 years.
- Leases and PPAs
- The state credit also applies to lease and PPA payments when the contract runs 10 years or more.
- Net metering
- The large utilities give one kWh of credit for each kWh you send out, and leftover credits move to later bills. On Phase One net metering the credit runs for a 20-year term with no cash-out.
- Monthly solar charge
- Homes that connect solar on or after January 1, 2022 pay a Customer Benefit Contribution of $0.97 to $1.67 per kW each month in 2026.
- Sales tax
- No 4% state sales tax on home solar; local sales tax depends on your county. Home batteries are exempt through May 31, 2028.
- Property tax
- Outside New York City, the value solar adds is exempt for 15 years unless your county, city, town, village or school district opted out.
- NYC abatement
- In the five boroughs, 7.5% of your installation cost comes off your property tax each year for 4 years.
- Battery incentive
- NYSERDA pays $200 to $250 per kWh of battery size ($2,700 to $3,375 for a 13.5 kWh battery), up to 25 kWh, through a participating contractor.
- NY-Sun rebate
- Closed for standard-income homes; only Long Island Affordable Solar is open, at $0.40 per watt for households under 80% of area median income.
- Federal credit
- The federal tax credit is $0 for systems installed after December 31, 2025.

What to check with your utility
Con Edison
- Net metering credits each kWh you export; the solar charge is $1.41 per kW a month from March 1, 2026, about $7.33 for a 5.20 kW system.
- The NY-Sun rebate block closed on May 29, 2025. A quote that still shows it is out of date.
- NYSERDA pays $250 per kWh for a battery here. Con Edison has announced a battery program; ask whether enrollment is open.
PSEG Long Island
- A home system earns credits only if it is 25 kW or smaller and no bigger than 110% of your last 12 months of use.
- The 2026 solar charge is $1.13 per kW a month. Income-qualified homes can still get $0.40 per watt through Affordable Solar.
- The battery incentive here is $250 per kWh, only for a battery installed with solar, and the block is nearly used up.
National Grid (Upstate)
- The 2026 solar charge is $0.97 per kW a month, the lowest of the large utilities.
- The upstate NY-Sun block closed on December 17, 2025. The battery incentive is $200 per kWh while the block lasts.
- Enroll a battery in its program to get the NYSERDA incentive; National Grid says customers earn about $250 a year.
NYSEG and RG&E
- The 2026 solar charge is $1.19 per kW a month at NYSEG and $1.31 at RG&E.
- Both utilities have asked for delivery increases of 35% to 36%. Ask for savings at today's rates and at higher ones.
- A battery must be enrolled in the utility's program, which pays $50 per kW delivered during summer events.
Central Hudson
- Its 2026 solar charge is the highest, $1.67 per kW a month, or about $140 a year on a 7 kW system.
- Its basic monthly charge is rising from $21.50 to $26.00. Ask that both charges appear in your savings estimate.
- Upstate battery rules apply: $200 per kWh from NYSERDA with utility program enrollment.
Check the company and its warranty
Three names can appear in one solar deal: the company that sells, the company that signs the contract and the licensed people who do the work. Check that they fit together.
- Contract company: look up its license on the New York has no statewide home improvement contractor or electrical license. Counties and cities license contractors (New York City DCWP, Suffolk, Nassau, Westchester, Putnam and Rockland counties, and the City of Buffalo) and electricians. Listed companies meet rule 1 as NY-Sun participating contractors in NYSERDA's project data; NYC home improvement licenses were checked in DCWP open data.. The name must match your contract.
- Electrical connection: New York leaves electrician licensing to cities and counties. In New York City the electrical permit for a solar system goes to a NYC-licensed master electrician, and only licensees or the workers they supervise may do the work (NYC Buildings: https://www.nyc.gov/site/buildings/property-or-business-owner/project-requirements-owner-solar.page). Ask who does it.
- Warranty documents: ask for the workmanship warranty, the roof coverage terms and each equipment warranty before you sign.

- Warranty protection (35 points): workmanship warranty length, roof-penetration coverage in writing and any production guarantee.
- Local presence (15 points): an office in New York and New York named as a service area.
- Track record (10 points): years installing solar.
- Options (10 points): batteries and the number of ways to pay.
Stars: 85 points or more is 5 (Top-rated), 72 is 4.5 (Excellent), 60 is 4 (Very good), 45 is 3.5 (Good), below 45 is 3 (Average). We did not inspect installations, collect customer quotes or test customer service.
New York solar company FAQs
How do I check a New York solar installer?
New York has no state contractor license to search. Ask whether the company is a NY-Sun participating contractor and look for its name in NYSERDA’s project data. In New York City, search its home improvement license in the DCWP lookup. On Long Island, Westchester and other counties, ask for the county license number and check it.
Does New York still have net metering?
Yes. Con Edison, National Grid, NYSEG, RG&E, Central Hudson, Orange & Rockland and PSEG Long Island give one kWh of credit for each kWh you export, and leftover credits roll forward. Homes connected since January 1, 2022 also pay a monthly Customer Benefit Contribution of $0.97 to $1.67 per kW in 2026.
Is the NY-Sun rebate still available?
Not for most homes. The Con Edison block closed on May 29, 2025 and the last upstate block on December 17, 2025. Only Long Island Affordable Solar is open, at $0.40 per watt for households under 80% of area median income. NYSERDA’s battery incentive of $200 to $250 per kWh is still open while money lasts.
Can I get the state tax credit on a lease?
Yes, if the lease or PPA runs 10 years or more. New York’s credit is 25% of your cost or payments, up to $5,000, claimed on Form IT-255. It lowers state income tax you owe and is not refunded, so check last year’s tax before counting the full amount in a quote.
