Need to know
- We rated 8 Indiana solar companies on licensing, warranties, local presence, track record and options. The top three: Solar Energy Solutions (3.5, Good), Morton Solar (3.5, Good) and Universal Solar Direct (3.5, Good).
- New systems at the five large utilities no longer get net metering. Power you send out earns about 5 cents per kWh, while power you use at home saves the full price, so size the system to your own use.
- Indiana has no state solar, contractor or electrical license. Ask for the city or county license on your contract and the license of the electrician who will wire the system.
What solar costs in Indiana
No federal credit for systems you own finished after December 31, 2025. Since July 1, 2022, new systems earn a wholesale-derived credit for exports, so the power you use at home decides whether solar pays. Batteries and roof work cost extra. Compare each quote’s price per watt with these numbers.

Solar incentives, tax breaks and rebates in Indiana
- Export credit
- Each large utility credits power you send to the grid at 1.25 times its average wholesale price from the year before: 5.561 cents per kWh at CenterPoint Energy, 5.4325 at AES Indiana and 4.9685 at NIPSCO.
- Older systems
- Homes on net metering by December 31, 2017 keep full credits until July 1, 2047. Later joiners keep them until July 1, 2032.
- Property tax
- The solar property tax deduction ended for assessment dates on or after January 1, 2025 (Senate Enrolled Act 1 of 2025). There is nothing to file.
- Rebates
- EcoGen found no state or utility rebate open for home solar. NIPSCO's feed-in tariff is closed to new applicants.
- Federal credit
- The federal credit for home solar ended for systems finished after December 31, 2025. A quote for a system you buy should not subtract it.
- Sales tax
- Indiana names no sales tax exemption for solar. On a lump-sum contract the installer pays tax on the materials and does not charge you sales tax; on a time-and-material contract it charges sales tax on the materials part (Department of Revenue Bulletin 60). Ask which kind your contract is.

What to check with your utility
AES Indiana
- Exports earn 5.4325 cents per kWh (Rider 16) since July 27, 2026; power is counted as it happens.
- The system must be owned and run by the customer. Ask in writing how a lease is treated.
- The utility asks for proof of liability insurance and a licensed electrician's sign-off, and installs the meter at its own cost.
NIPSCO
- Exports earn 4.9685 cents per kWh (Rider 689) since April 1, 2026.
- Its feed-in tariff, which bought all of a home's solar power, is closed to new applicants.
CenterPoint Energy Indiana South
- Exports earn 5.561 cents per kWh (Rider EDG) since March 1, 2026.
- It installs the meter at its own cost and sends a Permission to Operate. Do not switch on before you have it.
Duke Energy Indiana and Indiana Michigan Power
- Indiana Michigan Power credits 5.466 cents per kWh from the March 2026 billing month. EcoGen could not confirm Duke's current export rate; get it in writing before you compare quotes.
- Duke counts power in and out in 30-minute blocks, so midday exports do not cancel power bought at night.
REMCs and city utilities
- The state credit law does not apply to them. Each sets its own solar rules and credit.
- Ask for the credit rate and any solar charge in writing before you collect quotes.
Check the company and its warranty
Three names can appear in one solar deal: the company that sells, the company that signs the contract and the licensed people who do the work. Check that they fit together.
- Contract company: look up its license on the Indiana has no state contractor or electrical contractor license; cities and counties license contractors. We used local licenses from Indianapolis (Department of Business and Neighborhood Services) and Fort Wayne-Allen County, a county number the company prints, or the license check on the company's EcoGen profile.. The name must match your contract.
- Electrical connection: The state licenses only plumbers among construction contractors, and other contractor licensing, electrical included, is a local option that varies by city and county (IN.gov Business Guide: https://www.in.gov/core/business_guide.html). Ask who does it.
- Warranty documents: ask for the workmanship warranty, the roof coverage terms and each equipment warranty before you sign.

Each company gets up to 100 points from facts anyone can check: its own website and Indiana’s public license records, read October 14, 2026. Facts a company does not publish earn no points. No company pays for its rating, and we do not use customer star reviews.
- Licensing (30 points): an active state license, a licensed electrician and license numbers printed on its website.
- Warranty protection (35 points): workmanship warranty length, roof-penetration coverage in writing and any production guarantee.
- Local presence (15 points): an office in Indiana and Indiana named as a service area.
- Track record (10 points): years installing solar.
- Options (10 points): batteries and the number of ways to pay.
Stars: 85 points or more is 5 (Top-rated), 72 is 4.5 (Excellent), 60 is 4 (Very good), 45 is 3.5 (Good), below 45 is 3 (Average). We did not inspect installations, collect customer quotes or test customer service.
Indiana solar company FAQs
How do I check an Indiana solar installer?
Indiana has no state contractor or electrical license, so check the city or county where you live. Indianapolis and Fort Wayne-Allen County both have public license searches. Ask for the license number on the contract, the electrician who will connect your system, proof of insurance and recent local references.
Does Indiana have net metering?
Not for new systems at the five large utilities. Net metering closed there no later than July 1, 2022. New systems earn a credit for exported power set from wholesale prices, such as 5.4325 cents per kWh at AES Indiana. Older systems keep full net metering until 2032 or 2047.
What is the EDG rate in Indiana?
EDG means excess distributed generation: solar power you send to the grid. Each large utility credits it at 1.25 times its average wholesale price from the year before. Current rates are 5.561 cents per kWh at CenterPoint Energy, 5.4325 at AES Indiana and 4.9685 at NIPSCO.
Is there still a solar property tax deduction in Indiana?
No. Senate Enrolled Act 1 of 2025 ended it for assessment dates on or after January 1, 2025. County auditors stopped applying it with the property tax bills due in 2026, also for homes that had it before. A quote that subtracts it is out of date.
