Those are different skills. Not every company selling solar in Indiana five years ago made the switch, and the ones that did not still produce proposals that look completely normal.
The Self-Consumption Competence Test

Ask any Indiana company: what export rate did you use, what share of my production does your model assume I consume on site, and how did you arrive at that share? A company doing this properly references your actual usage pattern. A company still selling annual-offset math gives you a percentage with nothing behind it. The Annual-Offset Quote
Indiana’s characteristic bad proposal is a good proposal that is five years out of date.
It takes your annual consumption, sizes an array to match it, multiplies production by the retail rate, and shows you the savings. Every step of that was correct under the old rules. Under the current ones it overstates the return, because a meaningful share of that production is exported at a rate below the one used in the calculation.
The system is not defective. It is simply larger than it needed to be, and the extra capacity earns the lower rate for 25 years. The homeowner paid for panels that pay back at a discount, and nothing in the install or the paperwork ever flags it.
The reliable tell: a proposal that never mentions your load shape. Four things a current Indiana proposal does instead.
- Shows your usage by time of day, not just a twelve-month total. Two households with identical annual consumption have very different solar economics if one uses power at noon and the other at 8pm.
- Recommends a smaller system than a pre-2022 quote would have, and says why. That is correct behavior, not a downsell.
- Prices the battery against the actual rate gap. Ask for the retail rate and the export rate as two numbers, take the difference, then weigh the battery’s installed cost against it. Backup power during an outage is a separate benefit and belongs in a separate line.
- Raises load shifting before hardware. Running a water heater, pool pump, or EV charger during daylight raises self-consumption at no cost. A company that mentions this before selling you a battery is giving you honest advice.
Then get the cash price beside the financed price for the identical system. A 6.45 kW system, roughly the average size for a four-bedroom house, priced both ways makes a dealer fee visible. Deciding the Battery Question Honestly
Indiana is one of the states where a battery is a genuine financial question rather than a comfort purchase, which is exactly why it deserves to be argued rather than bundled.
The logic is narrow enough to check yourself. A battery earns its keep by moving a kilowatt-hour from the moment you produce it to the moment you need it, and what that move is worth is the difference between the retail rate you avoid and the export rate you would otherwise have received. Nothing else in the proposal changes that figure.
So the sequence is:
- Get the retail rate and the export rate as two separate numbers, from your own utility rather than from the proposal.
- Take the difference. That is the most a stored kilowatt-hour can be worth to you.
- Ask how many kilowatt-hours the battery is expected to cycle in a year, then multiply.
- Compare that annual figure against the battery’s installed cost, and against how long the warranty says it will last.
If the arithmetic works, it works, and a good company will walk you through it in that order. If it does not, the battery may still be worth buying for backup power during an outage, which is a real benefit and an entirely separate line of reasoning. What should not happen is the two being merged into one monthly payment, because that is how a comfort purchase gets sold as an investment.
One thing to try first, at no cost: shifting your water heater, pool pump, or EV charging into daylight hours. That raises self-consumption directly and may change how much battery you need, or whether you need one.
