The 2026 Price of an Indiana System
Indiana homes use a hefty 901 kWh a month, so typical systems run large: 7.92 kW at about $24,235 gross at the state benchmark of $3.06 per watt (state benchmark, March 1, 2026). That per-watt figure ranks 40 of 51, and it is the second number every bid should be tested against, right after the export credit. On a system this size, a quote 40¢ per watt above benchmark is more than $3,000 of unexplained premium.

Payback When Self-Use Is the Whole Game
A 7.92 kW array in Indianapolis-class sun produces about 10,810 kWh a year, close to the average home’s consumption. If every kilowatt-hour offset retail power, modeled at the 16.58¢ statewide average, the value would be about $1,790 a year and the simple payback would model to roughly 13.5 years, and that is the best case. Exported power earns the wholesale-derived credit instead, so real paybacks stretch with every kilowatt-hour that leaves the house. The design conclusions come straight from that structure: size at or below your usage, shift daytime load into production hours, and treat a battery as a serious option rather than an upsell, because converting exports into self-use is worth more in Indiana than in almost any full-retail state.

No State Solar License: The Vetting Burden Is Yours
Indiana requires no state-level solar contractor license. Local jurisdictions handle permitting and electrical work still requires licensed electricians, but there is no statewide credential to check the way there is in most states. That shifts vetting onto the buyer: ask for the electrical license of the person who will actually wire the system, proof of insurance, local references from the last 12 months, and the installer’s history with your specific utility’s interconnection queue. In a state where the billing rules already demand precision, an installer who cannot answer those four questions quickly is answering them.
When Indiana Solar Does Not Work
- Export-heavy households. Away all day with no load to shift means most production sells at wholesale-derived rates; the math thins fast.
- Anyone shown retail-valued exports. That is a 2021 proposal wearing a 2026 date. Walk away from the installer, not just the quote.
- Tight-margin budgets counting on credits. The federal residential credit is $0 for host-owned systems whose installation is completed after December 31, 2025, and Indiana’s third-party market (leases/PPAs) sits in legal gray territory, so plan on full sticker.
- Co-op and municipal customers who have not asked. The 2022 law governs the investor-owned utilities; co-ops and munis set their own terms, which can be better or worse. Ask first, model second.
