Need to know
- We rated 15 Arizona solar companies on licensing, warranties, local presence, track record and options. The top three: Solar Optimum (5, Top-rated), Sun Valley Solar Solutions (5, Top-rated) and Solar Topps (4.5, Excellent).
- Arizona has no net metering for new solar homes. Each utility sets its own export rate, from 1.87¢ per kWh on SRP’s main plans to 5.554¢ at APS, while power you buy costs about 15.40¢, so power you use yourself is worth the most.
- Solar wiring is electrical work. Look for an active ROC R-11, CR-11 or C-11 electrical license under the exact name on your contract; a B general residential license must subcontract electrical work.
What solar costs in Arizona
Gross price before incentives. The federal residential credit is $0 for host-owned systems finished after December 31, 2025, and Arizona's state tax credit takes up to $1,000 off if you buy the system. Batteries and roof work cost extra. Compare each quote’s price per watt with these numbers.

Solar incentives, tax breaks and rebates in Arizona
- Export credit
- No net metering for new solar homes. New applications earn 5.554¢ per kWh at APS, 5.51¢ at UNS Electric, 4.62¢ at TEP, 3.124¢ at Trico and 1.87¢ on SRP plans E-16 and E-28.
- State tax credit
- 25% of the cost of a system you buy, up to $1,000 per home, claimed on Arizona Form 310 (A.R.S. 43-1083). Leases and PPAs do not qualify.
- Sales tax
- No state or city sales tax on solar equipment from a seller registered with the Arizona Department of Revenue as a solar energy retailer (A.R.S. 42-5061(M)).
- Property tax
- A home solar system adds no value for property tax (A.R.S. 42-11054). There is no form to file.
- Battery payments
- APS Storage Rewards pays $110 per kW a year, and TEP Energy Storage Rewards pays $120 per kW per season, for a battery that helps the grid.
- Federal credit
- The homeowner credit ended for systems finished after December 31, 2025.

What to check with your utility
APS (Arizona Public Service)
- Applications from September 1, 2026 to August 31, 2027 earn 5.554¢ per kWh for exported power, fixed for 10 years from connection.
- You keep that rate only if the system is installed and approved within 180 days of the application (270 days if APS or another party causes the delay).
- A credit you do not use moves to the next bill. After the December bill, APS pays by check any credit over $25; a smaller balance carries into the next year.
- You must be on a time-of-use plan, and a solar home's bill includes a grid access charge. Ask APS for the amount.
SRP (Salt River Project)
- Plans E-16 and E-28 pay 1.87¢ per kWh for exported power, and SRP resets the rate each May. It is not fixed for 10 years.
- The older E-13 plan pays 3.45¢ and ends in November 2029. Ask SRP whether it still takes new customers.
- SRP's price book lists no payment for home batteries.
TEP (Tucson Electric Power)
- Applications since October 1, 2026 earn 4.62¢ per kWh, fixed for 10 years. Earlier applications keep 5.13¢.
- You must be on a time-of-use plan. Ask your installer to write the rate and the application date in the quote.
- Energy Storage Rewards pays $120 per kW per season for a battery that joins grid events.
UNS Electric
- Serves Mohave and Santa Cruz counties. Applications since October 1, 2026 earn 5.51¢ per kWh, fixed for 10 years. A credit balance over $10 is paid out on the October bill.
- You must be on a time-of-use plan. UNS Electric pays nothing for batteries, and TEP's battery program is closed to its homes.
Trico and other co-ops
- Trico pays 3.124¢ per kWh, fixed for 10 years, with a $3.38 monthly data charge and a minimum bill of about $25. A credit balance over $25 is paid out after the December bill.
- Other co-ops and city utilities set their own rate. Ask for the rate, how long it is fixed and any solar charge in writing.
Check the company and its warranty
Three names can appear in one solar deal: the company that sells, the company that signs the contract and the licensed people who do the work. Check that they fit together.
- Contract company: look up its license on the Arizona Registrar of Contractors (ROC) contractor license. The electrical classifications R-11 (residential), C-11 (commercial) and CR-11 (both) cover home solar wiring.. The name must match your contract.
- Electrical connection: The ROC's R-11 Electrical classification covers installing and repairing residential electrical systems and CR-11 covers the R-11 and C-11 scopes, while a B General Residential Contractor must subcontract electrical work to an appropriately licensed contractor (https://roc.az.gov/license-classifications). Ask who does it.
- Warranty documents: ask for the workmanship warranty, the roof coverage terms and each equipment warranty before you sign.

Each company gets up to 100 points from facts anyone can check: its own website and Arizona’s public license records, read October 14, 2026. Facts a company does not publish earn no points. No company pays for its rating, and we do not use customer star reviews.
- Licensing (30 points): an active state license, a licensed electrician and license numbers printed on its website.
- Warranty protection (35 points): workmanship warranty length, roof-penetration coverage in writing and any production guarantee.
- Local presence (15 points): an office in Arizona and Arizona named as a service area.
- Track record (10 points): years installing solar.
- Options (10 points): batteries and the number of ways to pay.
Stars: 85 points or more is 5 (Top-rated), 72 is 4.5 (Excellent), 60 is 4 (Very good), 45 is 3.5 (Good), below 45 is 3 (Average). We did not inspect installations, collect customer quotes or test customer service.

How do I check an Arizona solar installer?
Search the company on the Arizona Registrar of Contractors contractor search by name or six-digit license number. Look for an active R-11, CR-11 or C-11 electrical license under the exact name on your contract. A B general residential license must subcontract electrical work. Then read the written workmanship warranty before you sign.
Does Arizona have net metering?
Not for new solar homes. Each utility pays a set rate for power you send to the grid. New applications earn 5.554 cents per kWh at APS, 4.62 cents at TEP and 1.87 cents on SRP’s main plans. At APS, TEP and UNS Electric the rate is fixed for 10 years; SRP resets its rate each May.
Is there an Arizona solar tax credit?
Yes. Arizona takes 25% of the cost of a system you buy off your state income tax, up to $1,000 per home. You claim it on Arizona Form 310. Leases and PPAs do not qualify. The federal homeowner credit ended for systems finished after December 31, 2025.
Will solar raise my Arizona property tax or sales tax?
No. Under A.R.S. 42-11054 a home solar system adds no value for property tax, and there is nothing to file. Solar equipment is also free of state and city sales tax when the seller is registered with the Department of Revenue as a solar energy retailer. Ask whether your quote includes any tax.
