- We rated 15 Wisconsin solar companies on licensing, warranties, local presence, track record and options. The top three: Wolf River Electric (4.5, Excellent), Northwind Solar (North Wind Renewable Energy Cooperative) (4, Very good) and Arch Solar (Arch Electric) (4, Very good).
- Wisconsin has no single net-metering rule. MGE and Xcel credit extra power at about the retail price, while We Energies pays 3.636¢, WPS 3.584¢ and Alliant about 4.254¢ per kWh for power left at month end, so size the system to your own use there.
- Solar wiring is electrical work: Wis. Stat. 101.862 bars a company from doing it without a DSPS electrical contractor license. Check the company on your contract in the DSPS license lookup; most installers also hold a dwelling contractor certification for building permits.

Solar incentives, tax breaks and rebates in Wisconsin
- Focus on Energy rebate
- $600 per kW of panels, up to $2,400 per home, for a system bought new and switched on by December 31, 2026. Apply within 60 days and no later than January 31, 2027.
- Bill credits
- Each utility sets its own price for extra solar power, from 3.584¢ per kWh at WPS to 18.433¢ per kWh at MGE.
- Sales tax
- No sales tax on panels, inverters and mounting hardware. Your installer claims it; batteries are not covered.
- Property tax
- Solar does not raise your property tax. Send Form PR-303 to your assessor by March 1.
- Milwaukee Shines loan
- Summit Credit Union lends $1,000 to $25,000 to City of Milwaukee residents with a project the city program approved. The rate is not posted.
- Tax credits
- Wisconsin has no state tax credit for home solar, and the federal credit is $0 for systems installed after December 31, 2025.

What to check with your utility
We Energies
- Solar power first covers what you use that month. Power left over is paid 3.636¢ per kWh, a price reset every January 1.
- Solar homes pay an extra $0.05951 a day, about $1.81 a month. The rate covers systems under 300 kW, and a check comes once your credit passes $100.
- A system much bigger than your own use earns little here. Ask for a design sized to your bills.
Wisconsin Public Service (WPS)
- Your meter runs backward within the month. Extra power is credited at 3.584¢ per kWh, a price that changes every January 1.
- This rate is for systems of 20 kW or less. WPS requires a system sized to the power you expect to use; a bigger one can be moved to a different rate.
Alliant Energy (Wisconsin Power and Light)
- For systems of 20 kW or less, the meter runs backward and extra power is cashed out each month at an average of 4.254¢ per kWh (as of January 1, 2026).
- Above 20 kW the meter no longer runs backward, and all power you send out is paid a buyback price.
Xcel Energy (Northern States Power-Wisconsin)
- Net metering for systems of 100 kW or less: extra kWh carry to the next month.
- kWh still saved at year end are paid at wholesale energy prices, updated each year. Ask Xcel for this year's price in writing.
Madison Gas and Electric (MGE)
- Net metering for systems of 100 kW or less: power you send out is credited at 18.433¢ per kWh on the standard home rate.
- After your first 12 months, a home that sent out more than it bought over the past year earns 5.374¢ per kWh for the extra.
- Fixed daily charges stay. Once credits pass $100 you can ask for a check, at most once every 12 months.
Focus on Energy
- $600 per kW, up to $2,400, for a system bought new and switched on between January 1 and December 31, 2026. Leased systems do not qualify.
- Reserve the rebate online before the install, then apply within 60 days of switch-on and no later than January 31, 2027.
- Your utility must take part. The five large utilities do; check the list if a co-op or city utility serves you.
Co-ops and city utilities
- Each sets its own rules and price for extra power. Do not use the MGE or We Energies numbers for your home.
- Ask how it counts extra power, what it pays per kWh and the largest system it allows, and get the rate sheet in writing.
Check the company and its warranty
Three names can appear in one solar deal: the company that sells, the company that signs the contract and the licensed people who do the work. Check that they fit together.
- Contract company: look up its license on the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS): an Electrical Contractor license for the company that installs, plus a Dwelling Contractor certification for the company that pulls building permits on one- and two-family homes. The name must match your contract.
- Electrical connection: Wis. Stat. 101.862 bars anyone from engaging in the business of installing electrical wiring without a DSPS electrical contractor license, and the wiring must be done by licensed or registered electricians under a master electrician (https://docs.legis.wisconsin.gov/document/statutes/101.862). Ask who does it.
- Warranty documents: ask for the workmanship warranty, the roof coverage terms and each equipment warranty before you sign.

How do I check a Wisconsin solar installer?
Search the company name in the DSPS license lookup at license.wi.gov. Look for an active Electrical Contractor credential under the exact name on your contract, because state law requires one for any business that installs electrical wiring. Most installers also hold an active Dwelling Contractor certification for building permits. Then read the written workmanship warranty.
Does Wisconsin have net metering?
Not as one state rule. Each utility sets its own. MGE credits power you send out at 18.433 cents per kWh, and Xcel carries extra kWh to the next month. We Energies pays 3.636 cents, WPS 3.584 cents and Alliant about 4.254 cents per kWh for power left over at the end of the month.
How much is the Focus on Energy solar rebate?
It pays $600 per kW of panels, up to $2,400 per home. The system must be bought new and switched on between January 1 and December 31, 2026, and your utility must take part. Apply within 60 days of switch-on and no later than January 31, 2027. Your installer must be a registered Trade Ally.
Is there a solar tax credit in Wisconsin?
