Need to know
- We rated 8 Utah solar companies on licensing, warranties, local presence, track record and options. The top three: Smart Wave Solar (3.5, Good), Big Dog Solar (3, Average) and Intermountain Wind & Solar (3, Average).
- Utah has net billing, not net metering, for new solar homes. Rocky Mountain Power credits exports at 4.855¢ or 4.033¢ per kWh, about a third of the 13.32¢ average price, and unused credits expire each March, so size the system to your own use.
- Solar wiring is electrical work. An S202 Solar Photovoltaic license covers panels and racking but not wiring, which needs an E200 or E201 electrical contractor. Search the DOPL lookup for the exact name on your contract.
What solar costs in Utah
Gross price before incentives, solar only, host-owned; there is no federal credit for a system you own, and Utah's state credit is $0 for systems installed on or after January 1, 2024. Batteries and roof work cost extra. Compare each quote’s price per watt with these numbers.

Solar incentives, tax breaks and rebates in Utah
- Export credit
- No net metering for new systems. Rocky Mountain Power's Schedule 137 credits exports at 4.855¢ per kWh in June through September and 4.033¢ in October through May, since March 1, 2026.
- Credit expiry
- Unused export credits carry from bill to bill, then expire at your March meter reading each year. They are never paid out as cash.
- Battery payment
- Rocky Mountain Power's Wattsmart Battery pays $1,000 (under 10 kW) or $2,000 (over 10 kW) for a new battery enrolled for 4 years, then $15 per kW a year, up to $100.
- State tax credit
- Utah's credit is $0 for home solar installed on or after January 1, 2024, and home batteries are not eligible.
- Federal credit
- The homeowner credit ended for systems finished after December 31, 2025.
- HOA rules
- An association needs a vote of at least 67% of owners to add a solar ban to its declaration; an existing ban can still stand.

What to check with your utility
Rocky Mountain Power (Schedule 137 net billing)
- Exports earn 4.855¢ per kWh in June through September and 4.033¢ in October through May. The Commission resets the rate each March 1.
- Unused credits expire at your March meter read. Residential systems are capped at 25 kW DC.
- Wattsmart Battery pays $1,000 or $2,000 for a new battery. Quotes written before June 15, 2026 may still show the old $400 per kW.
Provo Power
- Credits 6.742¢ per kWh from the September 1, 2026 billing period, for systems up to 25 kW.
- Credit left after the billing cycle that includes February 28 is given up, and credits cannot pay the $18 monthly customer charge.
- Get a net metering license from Provo Power before you install.
St. George Energy Services
- Extra kWh are banked, and a December balance can be sold back at 3.622¢ per kWh.
- You pay a Solar Reliability Charge of 2.67¢ on every kWh your panels make, plus a $245 review fee and a $424 meter fee.
- Not allowed on rental property. Your contractor must have taken the city's solar class.
Moon Lake Electric and other co-ops and city utilities
- Moon Lake pays 2.4¢ per kWh for extra power, and solar accounts pay a $45 monthly service charge.
- Murray City Power is revising its net metering pilot, and Dixie Power posts no export credit. Get any utility's solar rate in writing before you sign.
Check the company and its warranty
Three names can appear in one solar deal: the company that sells, the company that signs the contract and the licensed people who do the work. Check that they fit together.
- Contract company: look up its license on the Utah DOPL contractor license (Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing). Home solar falls under S202 Solar Photovoltaic Contractor, E200 General Electrical or E201 Residential Electrical Contractor, or B100 General Building Contractor; one license number can carry several classifications.. The name must match your contract.
- Electrical connection: Under Utah Admin. Code R156-55a-301, the S202 Solar Photovoltaic scope excludes wiring, connections and wire methods governed by the National Electrical Code, which an S202 may subcontract to an E200 or E201 electrical contractor, and the B100 scope excludes electrical work (https://www.law.cornell.edu/regulations/utah/Utah-Admin-Code-R156-55a-301). Ask who does it.
- Warranty documents: ask for the workmanship warranty, the roof coverage terms and each equipment warranty before you sign.

Each company gets up to 100 points from facts anyone can check: its own website and Utah’s public license records, read October 14, 2026. Facts a company does not publish earn no points. We read Utah’s license records for Big Dog Solar, Creative Energies and Intermountain Wind & Solar on October 16, 2026 and show the result on each card; the ratings above were set before that read and do not yet count it. We could not check the other four yet. No company pays for its rating, and we do not use customer star reviews.
- Licensing (30 points): an active state license, a licensed electrician and license numbers printed on its website.
- Warranty protection (35 points): workmanship warranty length, roof-penetration coverage in writing and any production guarantee.
- Local presence (15 points): an office in Utah and Utah named as a service area.
- Track record (10 points): years installing solar.
- Options (10 points): batteries and the number of ways to pay.
Stars: 85 points or more is 5 (Top-rated), 72 is 4.5 (Excellent), 60 is 4 (Very good), 45 is 3.5 (Good), below 45 is 3 (Average). We did not inspect installations, collect customer quotes or test customer service.
Utah solar company FAQs
How do I check a Utah solar installer?
Search the company in DOPL’s licensee lookup at secure.utah.gov by name or license number. Look for an active S202 Solar Photovoltaic, E200 or E201 electrical, or B100 general building classification under the exact name on your contract. An S202 contractor must use an E200 or E201 contractor for the wiring.
Does Utah have net metering?
Not for new systems. Rocky Mountain Power puts new solar homes on Schedule 137 net billing. Power you take from the grid costs the normal rate, and exports earn 4.855 cents per kWh in June through September and 4.033 cents in October through May. Unused credits expire at your March meter read.
Is there a Utah solar tax credit?
No longer. Utah’s state credit is $0 for home solar installed on or after January 1, 2024, and home batteries are not eligible. The federal homeowner credit ended for systems finished after December 31, 2025. The cash incentive left is Rocky Mountain Power’s Wattsmart Battery payment of $1,000 or $2,000.
What if my power comes from Provo, St. George or a co-op?
Rocky Mountain Power’s rules do not apply. Provo Power credits 6.742 cents per kWh. St. George banks extra kWh but charges 2.67 cents on every kWh your panels make. Moon Lake Electric pays 2.4 cents with a $45 monthly charge for solar accounts. Get your utility’s terms in writing.
