Why choose Big Dog Solar, and why you might not

What Big Dog Solar does well, and where to be careful, compared with the installers it competes with most.

Reasons to choose Big Dog Solar

  • It covers roof leaks for 10 yearsBig Dog covers leaks where the panels are bolted to the roof for 10 years if you buy or take its $0-down plan. None of the three alternatives below lists a warranty for roof leaks.

  • Its warranty on its own work is 10 yearsIf you buy the system, Big Dog covers its own work for 10 years. Namaste also lists 10 years. Intermountain and Idahome list no term.

  • It puts in backup generators tooBig Dog puts in solar, batteries and whole-home natural gas generators. It names two batteries: the aPower2 and the Tesla Powerwall 3.

  • Its own teams design and installBig Dog says it started in solar in 2008 and runs its own design and install teams. Idahome says partner crews do its installs.

Reasons to look at others

  • It shows no license numbersBig Dog publishes no license number for Idaho, Montana, Colorado or Utah. Ask for the number in your state and check it before you sign.

  • Warranties change with the planIts 10-year warranty on its own work is listed for buyers only. Its rent-to-own and PPA plans (you pay for the power; the company owns the panels) differ by state. Ask who owns the panels and which warranties apply to your plan.

  • Some reviews describe pushy door-to-door sellersIts negative reviews describe sellers who ignored no-soliciting signs, a miswired system, slow permit closing and poor care after the sale. Ask who closes the permits and who handles service calls.

  • It names few equipment modelsIts pages show REC and Tesla logos but name no panel or inverter models. Ask for the exact models in your written quote.

Big Dog Solar reviews: what customers say

Each review site shows its own score; we read them on October 12 and 13, 2026 and do not combine them or add our own rating.

  • Google4.6 / 5546 reviews · Chubbuck, ID office listing only, not company-wideRead reviews

The five positive reviews below praise courteous, hard-working installers and responsive, knowledgeable customer service. The five negative reviews describe door-to-door sellers who ignored a no-soliciting sign or reportedly claimed to work with the utility, a system left unpaired and miswired with slow permit closing, high winter bills and a report of harassment by a sales rep, and poor care after the sale. These are issues to ask about, not a measure of how often they happen. Ask Big Dog who closes the permits and handles service calls after payment.

How we picked these: the five newest 5-star and the five newest 1- or 2-star reviews with written text on Google and Trustpilot, as of October 2026 (200 reviews read, back to Sep 26, 2024). We found no Trustpilot page for Big Dog Solar on October 12, 2026. Each quote is one sentence, word for word. Picking the highest and lowest ratings shows the range of experiences; it is not a representative sample, and we did not verify what reviewers describe.

How much does Big Dog Solar cost?

Big Dog Solar does not publish a fixed system price on the pages we reviewed. It points buyers to an online quote tool that designs a system from satellite images. Ask for an itemized written quote showing the cash price, system size, equipment models and, for a lease or financed balance, the full amount you will pay with APR and fees. For state price ranges, see our solar panel cost guide; for how the plans compare, see loans, leases and PPAs.

Purchase

You own it

You pay the full system cost up front. The company lists maker equipment warranties, a 10-year workmanship guarantee and a 10-year roof penetration warranty for this plan.

Lease to own

Ask who owns it until transfer

The company says ownership transfers to you after 6 years and the remaining balance can be paid up front or financed. It lists this plan in Idaho, Utah and Colorado.

Zero down (PPA)

The provider owns it

A locked-in monthly payment with $0 to little down. The homepage lists it in Colorado; its Boise, Pocatello and Helena pages also offer PPA options in Idaho and Montana. Ask who owns the system and who sets the rate.

Plans as listed on Big Dog Solar’s homepage and Boise page, read October 13, 2026. No lender or leasing partner is named.

Big Dog Solar does not name panel or inverter models in its page text. Its homepage shows REC and Tesla logos. Its battery backup page names two batteries: the aPower2 (15 kWh) and the Tesla Powerwall 3 (13.5 kWh). It also installs whole-home natural gas generators. Your written proposal should list the exact panel, inverter and battery models, the system size in kilowatts (kW) and the forecast yearly production in kilowatt-hours (kWh). The company says its customer service team works in Pocatello, Idaho, and it offers a page to verify a sales representative.

Company-published terms from Big Dog Solar’s homepage payment section (read October 13, 2026), its battery backup page and the FAQ on its dealer partner page (read October 14, 2026). The dealer page is written for installer partners, not homeowners. It has no separate warranty page. Your signed agreement decides what applies.

Its residential pages say “we’ve got warranties that keep you covered for 25 years” without saying which parts; we do not count that as a workmanship term.

Where does Big Dog Solar operate, and which licenses were checked?

Big Dog Solar’s service area page says it focuses mainly on Idaho, Utah, Colorado and Montana (read October 13, 2026). It lists towns around five hubs: Boise and Pocatello in Idaho, Helena in Montana, and Grand Junction and Windsor in Colorado. The Boise list also names Ontario and Nyssa, Oregon. No Utah hub or town list is given. The FAQ on its dealer partner page, written for installer partners, says it services “all of Southern Idaho, Northern Utah, Western Colorado and bits of Wyoming & Oregon” (read October 14, 2026). A listed town does not mean every address qualifies or that EcoGen can connect you with Big Dog Solar there.

Licenses

We have not checked Big Dog Solar’s licenses in a state registry yet, and its website does not list license numbers we could match. Check the license yourself under the exact business name on your contract. A license check confirms registration, not workmanship quality.

How we researched this profile

We read Big Dog Solar’s own pages on October 13, 2026: homepage, about, service area, contact, residential solar, battery backup, FAQ, Boise and Windsor pages, rep verification and privacy terms. On October 14, 2026 we read its battery options, dealer partner, going solar process and Pocatello, Helena and Grand Junction pages, checked the Idaho Secretary of State business registry and looked up its Google Business listing.
