What to check with your utility

Entergy Louisiana

  • Exports earn 3.86 cents per kWh since April 1, 2026, under Rider Schedule DG. The rate resets each year, so ask what rate the quote assumes for later years.
  • There is a one-time meter charge of $100, and credits cannot take the bill below the minimum bill.
  • For the battery reward of $75 per kWh, up to $1,000, apply within one year of installation.

Entergy New Orleans

  • Extra kWh cancel kWh you buy, one for one, for home systems up to 25 kW.
  • No solar connections in the Downtown Network Area, including the French Quarter. Ask about your address before you pay for a design.
  • There is a one-time meter charge of $50. Battery payments are up to $600 a year.

Cleco, SWEPCO and the electric co-ops

  • Exports earn avoided cost: Cleco 3.85 cents, SWEPCO 3.66 cents and the co-ops 3.58 to 3.99 cents per kWh in 2026.
  • Each utility takes its own interconnection application. Your installer files it and you sign the agreement.
  • City-owned utilities such as Lafayette Utilities System are not under the state rule. Get their solar rate in writing.

Check the company and its warranty

Three names can appear in one solar deal: the company that sells, the company that signs the contract and the licensed people who do the work. Check that they fit together.

Before your first sales call, read questions to ask your solar installer and how to read a solar quote.

Compare your Louisiana quotes

Ask every company to quote the same basics. Then the differences you see are real.

The boxes are for your own use. Nothing is saved or sent.

From quote to permission to operate

Some steps overlap, and timing depends on your town, your utility and equipment supply. Ask each installer for a written schedule for your project.

  1. Proposal and site check

The installer looks at your roof, shading and electrical panel and gives you a written proposal.

    You and the installer
  2. Design and applications

After you sign, the installer finishes the design and applies to your utility for the connection.

    Installer; you sign the forms
  3. Permits and utility review

Your town or county reviews the building and electrical permits. The utility reviews the connection.

    Permit office and utility
  4. Installation and inspection

The crew installs the system. A licensed electrician connects it, and the inspector checks the work.

    Installer crew, electrician and inspector
  5. Permission to operate

The utility approves the system and updates your meter if needed. Turn the system on only after this step.

How we rate Louisiana solar companies

Each company gets up to 100 points from facts anyone can check: its own website and Louisiana’s public license records, read October 14, 2026. Facts a company does not publish earn no points. No company pays for its rating, and we do not use customer star reviews.

  • Licensing (30 points): an active state license, a licensed electrician and license numbers printed on its website.
  • Warranty protection (35 points): workmanship warranty length, roof-penetration coverage in writing and any production guarantee.
  • Local presence (15 points): an office in Louisiana and Louisiana named as a service area.
  • Track record (10 points): years installing solar.
  • Options (10 points): batteries and the number of ways to pay.

Stars: 85 points or more is 5 (Top-rated), 72 is 4.5 (Excellent), 60 is 4 (Very good), 45 is 3.5 (Good), below 45 is 3 (Average). We did not inspect installations, collect customer quotes or test customer service.

Louisiana solar company FAQs

How do I check a Louisiana solar installer?

Search the company name or license number in the LSLBC contractor search. Look for an active license with the Solar Energy Equipment classification, which state law requires for solar jobs of $10,000 or more. Match the name on the license to the name on your contract, and ask who holds the Electrical classification.

Does Louisiana have net metering?

Only in New Orleans for new systems. Entergy New Orleans credits extra power one for one. Utilities regulated by the Public Service Commission credit exports at avoided cost instead, 3.58 to 3.99 cents per kWh in 2026, for homes that connected after December 31, 2019.

Is there a Louisiana solar tax credit?

No. The state’s 2025 income tax instructions list no solar credit, and the federal homeowner credit ended for systems finished after December 31, 2025. What remains is a property tax exemption for solar equipment on a home you own and live in, under La. R.S. 47:1706.

Does a battery make sense in Louisiana?

Price it as its own decision. Entergy Louisiana pays $75 per kWh for a new battery, up to $1,000, plus up to $600 a year for sharing power during grid events. Entergy New Orleans pays up to $600 a year. A battery also keeps power you would otherwise export for about 4 cents.

Will the companies on this page contact me?

Not because they appear here. This page is an editorial comparison. If you request quotes, the providers that serve your area may contact you. They can include installers, marketplaces and lead exchanges. Our page on how we make money explains how EcoGen is paid.
