Need to know
- We rated 8 Wyoming solar companies on licensing, warranties, local presence, track record and options. The top three: Big Dog Solar (3, Average), Creative Energies (3, Average) and Intermountain Wind & Solar (3, Average).
- Extra kWh become credits that carry from month to month, but each January the utility buys what is left at about 1.4 cents per kWh. Size the system to your yearly use. City-owned utilities such as Gillette’s are outside the law.
- Wyoming has no statewide general contractor license. Wiring solar into your home must be done by an electrical contractor licensed by the Department of Fire Prevention and Electrical Safety, so ask for the number and look it up.

Solar incentives, tax breaks and rebates in Wyoming
- Net metering
- For a home system up to 25 kW, each extra kWh you send out becomes a credit that cancels a kWh you buy later.
- January sale
- Each January your utility buys leftover credits at its avoided cost: 1.418 cents per kWh at Rocky Mountain Power for 2026, so 100 kWh bring $1.42.
- Sales tax
- Wyoming's sales tax law has no exemption for home solar, so the 4% state tax plus any county tax applies.
- Tax credits and rebates
- Wyoming has no income tax credit and no open state rebate, and the federal credit ended for systems installed after December 31, 2025.
- Solar rights
- The Solar Rights Act bars cities, towns and counties from prohibiting panels, and a local solar permit protects your sunlight from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

What to check with your utility
Rocky Mountain Power
- Serves about 4 in 10 Wyoming homes. Schedule 2 charges 11.515 cents per kWh plus a $24.24 monthly basic charge that solar cannot offset.
- Leftover credits are bought each January at 1.418 cents per kWh for 2026 (Schedule 37). An update is pending, so ask for the January 2027 price in writing.
- It filed for an 8.8% rate increase in May 2026.
Black Hills Energy (Cheyenne Light, Fuel and Power)
- Serves the Cheyenne area and is covered by the state net metering law for systems up to 25 kW.
- Ask for its January price for leftover credits in writing; EcoGen could not read its price sheet.
Montana-Dakota Utilities
- Covered by the state law, with leftover credits bought at its avoided cost (Rate 57).
- Docket 20004-179-ET-26 is open to revise its net metering tariff, so ask how the design holds up if crediting changes.
Electric co-ops
- Co-ops such as Powder River Energy, High Plains Power, High West Energy and Lower Valley Energy are covered by the law. Powder River Energy pays 1.4686 cents per kWh for leftover credits since January 1, 2026.
- Get the co-op's net metering agreement, fees and January price in writing. Lower Valley Energy members should ask about any demand charge.
City-owned utilities
- Gillette, Cody, Powell, Torrington and Wheatland run their own electric utilities, which the state net metering law does not cover.
- Get the city's solar rules in writing before you sign anything.
Check the company and its warranty
Three names can appear in one solar deal: the company that sells, the company that signs the contract and the licensed people who do the work. Check that they fit together.
- Contract company: look up its license on the Wyoming electrical contractor license (Department of Fire Prevention and Electrical Safety); Wyoming has no statewide general contractor license. The name must match your contract.
- Electrical connection: Wiring solar into your home is electrical work: W.S. 35-9-123 requires electrical installations to be done by licensed electrical contractors employing licensed master or journeyman electricians, or registered apprentices they supervise (https://codes.findlaw.com/wy/title-35-public-health-and-safety/wy-st-sect-35-9-123/). Ask who does it.
- Warranty documents: ask for the workmanship warranty, the roof coverage terms and each equipment warranty before you sign.

We could not check Wyoming’s license records for these companies yet, so none of them gets points for a checked state license. No company pays for its rating, and we do not use customer star reviews.

How do I check a Wyoming solar installer?
Wyoming has no statewide general contractor license. Ask for the company’s electrical contractor license number and look it up by contractor name in the Department of Fire Prevention and Electrical Safety’s online lookup. Then read the written workmanship warranty, and ask who pulls the permit and files the utility paperwork.
Does Wyoming have net metering?
Yes, for systems up to 25 kW at power companies, electric co-ops and irrigation districts. Each extra kWh your panels send out becomes a credit that cancels a kWh you buy later. City-owned utilities, such as those in Gillette and Cody, are outside the law and set their own rules.
What happens to unused solar credits in Wyoming?
