Need to know
- We rated 13 Washington solar companies on licensing, warranties, local presence, track record and options. The top three: Puget Sound Solar (5, Top-rated), A&R Solar (4.5, Excellent) and Sunergy Systems (4.5, Excellent).
- Washington still credits extra power 1 kWh for 1 kWh, but only until June 30, 2029 or until your utility passes its cap. PSE and Pacific Power are already past it, and unused credits go to the utility every March 31.
- Solar wiring is electrical work: it needs an L&I electrical contractor license. A company with only a construction contractor registration must subcontract the wiring. Check both on L&I’s Verify a contractor tool under the name on your contract.
What solar costs in Washington
Gross cash price before incentives. There is no federal credit for systems you own that are finished after December 31, 2025. Batteries and roof work cost extra. Compare each quote’s price per watt with these numbers.

Solar incentives, tax breaks and rebates in Washington
- Net metering
- Each extra kWh takes 1 kWh off a later bill. State law requires it until June 30, 2029, or sooner once a utility reaches 4% of its 1996 peak demand.
- March 31 reset
- Credits you have not used by March 31 each year go to the utility, with no payment.
- Sales tax
- No state or local sales tax on equipment for a 1 kW to 100 kW system, through December 31, 2029 (RCW 82.08.962). Labor is exempt only if the installer meets the state's conditions.
- PSE battery payment
- Flex Batteries pays $75 per kWh of battery size, up to $1,000 per battery, plus 50 cents per kWh sent out in Flex events, up to $500 a year.
- Pacific Power battery payment
- Wattsmart Battery pays $600 per kW of battery power, up to $3,000 per home, for owners on its net metering schedule.
- Tax credits
- None. Washington has no individual income tax, and the federal homeowner credit ended for systems installed after December 31, 2025.

What to check with your utility
Puget Sound Energy (PSE)
- PSE is past the state cap (132.25% on January 31, 2026). It keeps net metering open under its own Schedule 150 until a replacement takes effect and says it will give notice first.
- Its other option, the Solar Energy Credit, pays 6.713¢ per kWh and cannot be combined with net metering. Check which one is on your application.
- Flex Batteries pays up to $1,000 per battery at sign-up. You cannot join on a time-of-use plan.
Seattle City Light
- Credits each extra kWh at your retail rate: 13.38¢ per kWh on the flat rate inside Seattle.
- It had used 92.57% of its cap on January 31, 2026 and is planning the next phase, with a goal of at least six months' notice.
- Ask City Light which rule covers an application filed today.
Avista (Spokane and eastern Washington)
- Below the cap (77.84% on January 31, 2026) and no change reported to WSU, so the state rule applies: 1 kWh credit for 1 kWh exported.
- Unused credits go to Avista every March 31. Confirm its current rule in writing before you sign.
Snohomish County PUD and other PUDs
- Snohomish PUD keeps credits in dollars, at 10.613¢ per kWh since April 1, 2026. Credits cut only the energy part of the bill, not the daily base charge.
- Clark County PUD (63.61%) and Tacoma Power (50.86%) were below the cap. WSU lists Franklin PUD, Kittitas PUD and OPALCO as no longer following the state credit rule.
- A public utility changes its rule by a vote of its own board. Get the current credit in writing.
Pacific Power (Yakima and Walla Walla area)
- Past the cap (115.42%). It asked the UTC to close net metering to applications after February 1, 2027 (Docket UE-250695, pending on October 1, 2026).
- Under the proposal, a complete application by February 1, 2027 keeps net metering for 25 years. The UTC can change or reject it.
- Wattsmart Battery pays $600 per kW, up to $3,000. Get the Washington terms in writing.
Check the company and its warranty
Three names can appear in one solar deal: the company that sells, the company that signs the contract and the licensed people who do the work. Check that they fit together.
- Contract company: look up its license on the Washington Department of Labor & Industries (L&I): electrical contractor license (RCW 19.28) and construction contractor registration (RCW 18.27). The name must match your contract.
- Electrical connection: Washington makes it unlawful to install or maintain wires or equipment that carry electric current without an L&I electrical contractor license (RCW 19.28.041, https://app.leg.wa.gov/RCW/default.aspx?cite=19.28.041); L&I's registry says a general contractor must subcontract electrical work to a licensed electrical contractor. Ask who does it.
- Warranty documents: ask for the workmanship warranty, the roof coverage terms and each equipment warranty before you sign.

Ask every company to quote the same basics. Then the differences you see are real.

Some steps overlap, and timing depends on your town, your utility and equipment supply. Ask each installer for a written schedule for your project.

Each company gets up to 100 points from facts anyone can check: its own website and Washington’s public license records, read October 14, 2026. Facts a company does not publish earn no points. No company pays for its rating, and we do not use customer star reviews.
- Licensing (30 points): an active state license, a licensed electrician and license numbers printed on its website.
- Warranty protection (35 points): workmanship warranty length, roof-penetration coverage in writing and any production guarantee.
- Local presence (15 points): an office in Washington and Washington named as a service area.
- Track record (10 points): years installing solar.
- Options (10 points): batteries and the number of ways to pay.
Stars: 85 points or more is 5 (Top-rated), 72 is 4.5 (Excellent), 60 is 4 (Very good), 45 is 3.5 (Good), below 45 is 3 (Average). We did not inspect installations, collect customer quotes or test customer service.
Washington solar company FAQs
How do I check a Washington solar installer?
Search the company on L&I’s Verify a contractor tool by name, business number or license number. Look for an active electrical contractor license, because solar wiring is electrical work, and read the violations and strikes sections. A general contractor registration alone must subcontract electrical work. Then read the written workmanship warranty.
Does Washington have net metering?
Yes, for now. State law makes utilities credit each extra kWh against a later kWh until June 30, 2029, or sooner once a utility passes 4% of its 1996 peak demand. PSE and Pacific Power are past that cap, and PSE keeps net metering open by its own rule. Unused credits expire every March 31.
Is there a solar tax credit in Washington?
No. Washington has no individual income tax, so there is no state credit, and the federal homeowner credit ended for systems installed after December 31, 2025. The main state benefit is no sales tax on equipment for systems of 1 to 100 kW, through December 31, 2029.
Can I get paid for a home battery in Washington?
