- We rated 5 Hawaii solar companies on licensing, warranties, local presence, track record and options. The top three: RevoluSun (4.5, Excellent), Alternate Energy Hawaii (4.5, Excellent) and Hawaii Energy Connection (KumuKit) (4, Very good).
- Net metering closed to new homes on October 13, 2015. New Hawaiian Electric systems earn export credits set by island and hour, and Kauai’s KIUC pays a monthly rate tied to oil prices.
- Hawaii licenses contractors by class. A C-60 solar license covers panels, batteries and low-voltage DC wiring only; a C-13 electrical contractor must connect the system to your home’s wiring.
What solar costs in Hawaii
Prices are before incentives. The federal residential credit is $0 for host-owned systems completed after December 31, 2025, and Hawaii's state tax credit can take off 35%, up to $5,000. Batteries and roof work cost extra. Compare each quote’s price per watt with these numbers.

Solar incentives, tax breaks and rebates in Hawaii
- State tax credit
- 35% of the system cost, up to $5,000 for a single-family home, claimed on Form N-342. Act 24 (May 21, 2026) added a State Energy Office certificate and a $40,000,000 yearly statewide limit for 2027 to 2030.
- Income limit
- From tax year 2027 there is no credit above $175,000 of adjusted gross income, or $350,000 on a joint return. The credit ends for tax years that begin after December 31, 2029.
- Export credits
- Hawaiian Electric credits exported power by island and hour. On Oahu it is 13.5 cents per kWh by day, 32.9 cents from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and 18.9 cents overnight.
- Battery payment
- Hawaiian Electric's BYOD Plus pays $400 per kW of battery power you commit to a daily 2-hour window, once. Lower-income homes get $800 per kW.
- Kauai
- KIUC pays a monthly Schedule Q rate for exported power. From January to September 2026 it ran from 14.33 to 27.14 cents per kWh.
- Property tax
- In the City and County of Honolulu, solar devices are not counted in your property's taxable value. On other islands, ask your county.
- GEM$ loan
- A state on-bill loan at a fixed 5.5% for up to 25 years, for Hawaiian Electric customers with income under 140% of area median income.
- Federal credit
- The homeowner credit ended for systems installed after December 31, 2025.

What to check with your utility
Hawaiian Electric: Smart Renewable Energy Export (Oahu, Maui, Hawaii Island, Molokai, Lanai)
- Exports earn a different rate on each island and at each hour. Maui pays 6.6 cents by day; Hawaii Island pays 10.6 cents.
- Rates in a new agreement are locked for 7 years, then follow a table updated every 3 years. Current rates cover agreements signed through April 2027.
- Credits are settled once a year and unused credits expire. You need an advanced meter.
Hawaiian Electric: Bring Your Own Device Plus
- Pays $400 per committed kW of new battery power, once, plus a monthly credit for power the battery sends out in your 2-hour window.
- On a lease, the leasing company owns the battery and gets the payment.
- Leaving early means paying part of it back. Get the commitment term in writing; Hawaiian Electric's page gives both 5 and 10 years.
Kauai Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC)
- None of the Hawaiian Electric rates or battery payments apply on Kauai.
- Schedule Q pays KIUC's avoided cost, which changes monthly with oil prices and is expected to fall.
- A system above KIUC's right size (2.5 kW for a home using up to 500 kWh a month) needs a curtailment meter, and KIUC can switch it off.
Older solar homes (net metering, CGS, CGS Plus, Smart Export)
- These programs are closed. Changing or adding to the system can put the old terms at risk; get your utility's answer in writing first.
- Hawaiian Electric moves CGS, CGS Plus and Smart Export customers to the current export program 7 years after their contract date.
Check the company and its warranty
Three names can appear in one solar deal: the company that sells, the company that signs the contract and the licensed people who do the work. Check that they fit together.
- Contract company: look up its license on the Hawaii contractor license (DCCA Professional and Vocational Licensing Division, Contractors License Board), with the C-13 electrical contractor or C-60 solar power systems contractor classification. The name must match your contract.
- Electrical connection: A C-60 solar power systems contractor may install panels, batteries, controls and low-voltage DC wiring only; connecting wires to the home's electrical system is C-13 electrical contractor work, and the C-13 class includes C-60 work (https://cca.hawaii.gov/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/DescriptionofContractorLicenseClassifications-1.pdf). Ask who does it.
- Warranty documents: ask for the workmanship warranty, the roof coverage terms and each equipment warranty before you sign.

Each company gets up to 100 points from facts anyone can check: its own website and Hawaii’s public license records, read October 14, 2026. Facts a company does not publish earn no points. No company pays for its rating, and we do not use customer star reviews.
- Licensing (30 points): an active state license, a licensed electrician and license numbers printed on its website.
- Warranty protection (35 points): workmanship warranty length, roof-penetration coverage in writing and any production guarantee.
- Local presence (15 points): an office in Hawaii and Hawaii named as a service area.
- Track record (10 points): years installing solar.
- Options (10 points): batteries and the number of ways to pay.
Stars: 85 points or more is 5 (Top-rated), 72 is 4.5 (Excellent), 60 is 4 (Very good), 45 is 3.5 (Good), below 45 is 3 (Average). We did not inspect installations, collect customer quotes or test customer service.
Hawaii solar company FAQs
How do I check a Hawaii solar installer?
Search the company’s license number on the DCCA Professional and Vocational Licensing search and match the name to your contract. Look for the C-13 electrical or C-60 solar class. A C-60 license covers panels and DC wiring only, so ask which C-13 contractor connects the system to your panel.
Does Hawaii still have net metering?
Not for new homes. Net metering closed on October 13, 2015. New Hawaiian Electric systems join Smart Renewable Energy Export, which pays by island and hour: on Oahu, 13.5 cents per kWh by day and 32.9 cents from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Kauai’s KIUC uses its own Schedule Q rate.
Is a battery worth adding in Hawaii?
Often, yes. Daytime exports earn the least, so storing that power for the evening is worth more. Hawaiian Electric’s BYOD Plus pays $400 per kW of battery power you commit, once, or $800 for lower-income homes. On a lease, the leasing company gets it. We found no KIUC battery payment on Kauai.
How much is the Hawaii solar tax credit?
