Need to know
- We rated 11 Nebraska solar companies on licensing, warranties, local presence, track record and options. The top three: Everlight Solar (3.5, Good), Dixon Power Systems (3.5, Good) and SWT Energy (3.5, Good).
- Every Nebraska utility nets your solar against power you buy in the same month, for systems up to 25 kW. Extra power earns only a low dollar credit set by your utility, so size the system to your own use.
- Nebraska has no solar license. Every contractor must register with the Department of Labor, and only an electrical contractor licensed by the State Electrical Division may wire your system. Ask for both.
What solar costs in Nebraska
Prices are cash, before incentives. There is no federal credit for systems you own, and the typical system pays back in 18.7 years at OPPD, the largest utility, and 16.5 to 19.3 years at OPPD, LES and NPPD (simple payback before incentives). Batteries and roof work cost extra. Compare each quote’s price per watt with these numbers.

Solar incentives, tax breaks and rebates in Nebraska
- Net metering
- State law makes every Nebraska utility net your solar against power you buy in the same month, for systems up to 25 kW. Extra power earns a dollar credit at the utility's avoided cost.
- Year-end payout
- Leftover credit carries forward and is paid to you with the last bill of each yearly period, or within 60 days if you end service.
- The 1% limit
- A utility may stop taking new net metering customers once home solar reaches 1% of its peak demand. Norris Public Power District moved new systems to net billing on January 1, 2026.
- LES capacity payment
- Lincoln Electric System pays once: $375 per kW for south-facing panels or $475 per kW for west-facing or tracking panels, through an installer in its Solar Trade Ally Network.
- OPPD rebate
- Omaha Public Power District has run a one-time rebate for systems by an OPPD Solar Trade Ally, first come, first served. Ask OPPD if money is left.
- State loan
- Nebraska Dollar and Energy Saving Loans carry 5%, 3.5% or less simple interest for up to 10 years. Do not sign until the lender confirms the state commitment.
- Federal credit
- The federal tax credit for home solar ended for systems installed after December 31, 2025.

What to check with your utility
Omaha Public Power District (OPPD)
- Net metering: power you send out cancels power you bought that month, and extra power becomes a dollar credit paid out at year-end.
- Ask OPPD in writing for today's credit per extra kWh and whether its rebate still has money.
- The rebate only goes to systems installed by an installer on OPPD's Solar Trade Ally list.
Lincoln Electric System (LES)
- A one-time $375 per kW (south-facing) or $475 per kW (west-facing or tracking) payment, only through its Solar Trade Ally Network.
- Extra power earns about 3.9 cents per kWh in summer and about 2.8 cents the rest of the year, paid by check at year-end.
- Ask LES if its current level, Tier 2, is still open before you sign.
Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD)
- For homes NPPD bills itself, extra power earns 9.07 cents per kWh in summer and 5.06 cents the rest of the year.
- No NPPD solar or battery rebate was found.
- Towns that resell NPPD power set their own rules. Ask your town utility for its credit and whether net metering is open.
Norris PPD and other districts
- Norris PPD has passed the 1% limit: new systems get 6.25 cents per kWh in summer and 4.41 cents the rest of the year on all power sent out, plus $1 per kW a month.
- Each other district or city utility sets its own credit. Get it in writing before you size the system.
Check the company and its warranty
Three names can appear in one solar deal: the company that sells, the company that signs the contract and the licensed people who do the work. Check that they fit together.
- Contract company: look up its license on the Nebraska Department of Labor contractor registration (required of every contractor before work in Nebraska) plus electrical licenses from the State Electrical Division. Nebraska has no separate solar or home improvement license.. The name must match your contract.
- Electrical connection: Under Neb. Rev. Stat. 81-2108, no one may wire or install electrical equipment for another unless licensed by the State Electrical Board as an electrical contractor, Class B electrical contractor or Class A master electrician (https://nebraskalegislature.gov/laws/statutes.php?statute=81-2108), and under 81-2129 the utility connects a new installation only after an inspection certificate is filed (https://nebraskalegislature.gov/laws/statutes.php?statute=81-2129). Ask who does it.
- Warranty documents: ask for the workmanship warranty, the roof coverage terms and each equipment warranty before you sign.

- Licensing (30 points): an active state license, a licensed electrician and license numbers printed on its website.
- Warranty protection (35 points): workmanship warranty length, roof-penetration coverage in writing and any production guarantee.
- Local presence (15 points): an office in Nebraska and Nebraska named as a service area.
- Track record (10 points): years installing solar.
- Options (10 points): batteries and the number of ways to pay.
Stars: 85 points or more is 5 (Top-rated), 72 is 4.5 (Excellent), 60 is 4 (Very good), 45 is 3.5 (Good), below 45 is 3 (Average). We did not inspect installations, collect customer quotes or test customer service.

How do I check a Nebraska solar installer?
Look up the company in the Department of Labor contractor registration search, which every contractor must pass before working in Nebraska. Registration does not test skill. Then ask which licensed electrical contractor will wire your system and check that person in the State Electrical Division search, since only licensed electrical contractors may wire for others.
Does Nebraska have net metering?
Yes. State law requires every utility to offer it for systems up to 25 kW. Power you send out cancels power you bought in the same month. Extra power earns a dollar credit at the utility’s avoided cost, and leftover credit is paid out each year. A utility may stop taking new customers at 1% of its peak demand.
Does Lincoln Electric System pay for solar panels?
Yes, once. LES pays $375 per kW of panel size for south-facing panels, or $475 per kW for west-facing or sun-tracking panels. A 5 kW south-facing system gets $1,875. The installer must be in the LES Solar Trade Ally Network, and you should ask LES whether its current level is still open.
Is there a Nebraska solar tax credit?
The federal credit for home solar ended for systems installed after December 31, 2025. EcoGen found no Nebraska state income tax credit for home solar. If a quote subtracts a tax break, ask the installer which law it rests on and check it with the Nebraska Department of Revenue before you sign.
