What Maine Doesn’t Have, and Why It Still Works

Maine wins on structure, not subsidies. Knowing what is absent protects you from the pitches that pretend otherwise.

  • No sales-tax exemption. Maine’s 5.5% sales tax applies to solar equipment. The old exemption is gone, and any quote presented as tax-free is either wrong or hiding the tax in the price.
  • No state rebate, no state credit. The $14,430 average system cost is also the net cost. Nothing to file, nothing to wait on, nothing a salesperson can inflate.
  • No federal credit for buyers since December 31, 2025. Lease and PPA providers can still claim the commercial credit and pass some through; compare any lease against a straight cash purchase line by line.
  • What it DOES have is protection: 1:1 net billing at the full retail rate, against the fourth-highest electricity prices in the country. Structure beats subsidy when the grid costs 30¢.

When Maine Solar Should Wait

Even the simplest strong math has exceptions. Here is who should hold off Down East.

  • Roofs at end of life. Removing and reinstalling an array costs thousands no warranty covers, and Maine roofs work hard. Re-roof first; the 1:1 credit is not going anywhere.
  • Deep conifer shade. Maine’s canopy is evergreen; there is no leafless winter window to save a shaded roof’s production. Site study before signature.
  • Very low usage. A camp or a small efficient home has little bill to offset, and $3.00/W minimum system costs still apply. Payback stretches past sense.
  • Moving within 8 to 12 years. The article-verified return window is real but not short; selling early funds the next owner’s electricity, not yours.
  • Buying a battery for the savings. With exports already at full retail, arbitrage earns nearly nothing. Buy storage for outages, and Maine has those, but price it as resilience.

How does Maine net billing actually credit my exports?

One to one, at the full retail rate: every kilowatt-hour you send out offsets a kilowatt-hour you buy, and at 30.34¢ that credit is worth more in Maine than almost anywhere in the country.

It also means system sizing is simple here: match your annual usage without export-penalty gymnastics.

Does Maine waive sales tax on solar?

No, and this is the most repeated misconception in Maine solar sales. The state’s 5.5% sales tax applies to solar equipment; the old exemption is gone.

Make sure the quoted total includes it, or the real price is hundreds higher than the paper says.

CMP or Versant — does my utility change the math?

Yes, by years. Both credit exports 1:1, but their retail rates differ by several cents, and the rate is what each credited kilowatt-hour is worth.

Is a battery worth it in Maine?

For backup, often; for savings, no. Exports already earn full retail, so storing power to avoid exporting earns almost nothing.

Maine outages are real, and resilience is a fair reason to buy storage. Just do not let anyone sell the battery as an investment.
