The Certificate Offset: What Comes Back After You Pay
The sticker is only half a District cost conversation. A 7 kW system generates about 8 solar renewable energy certificates a year, and D.C. certificates have traded at $360 to $400 each, roughly $2,900 to $3,200 of annual income when you own and register them. Stack Pepco’s full-retail netting, worth another $1,200-$1,350 a year on typical usage, and certificate income alone can cover a third or more of the system’s cost across its early years. The federal residential credit is gone since December 2025, and in this one market its absence barely moves the math; the certificates were always the bigger line.
Financing a District System Without Losing the Certificates
Strong economics attract creative financing. Two checks protect the value. First, get the cash price and the financed price side by side; the gap is the dealer fee, and in the District it sometimes hides inside a “free panels” pitch that quietly assigns your certificates. Second, confirm in the contract that SREC income accrues to you rather than being applied against the loan’s fee. A financed D.C. system can still be an excellent purchase; a financed system that surrendered its certificates rarely is.
Cost Red Flags on a District Quote
- A price below $2.80 per watt with no explanation. Someone is economizing on the parts of a D.C. install that matter: rigging, permitting experience, or the crew itself.
- A price above $3.70 per watt with no written reason. Structural work and specialty roofing justify it; “premium equipment” alone usually does not.
- Certificate income counted twice. Some quotes subtract SREC income from the price AND show it as annual income. It is one number, not two.
- A payback chart still showing the federal credit. It ended December 31, 2025; its ghost dates the whole spreadsheet.
- No cash price anywhere. Without the cash anchor, the dealer fee inside a financed total is invisible.
