The Cost of Solar Panels in Alabama

Alabama has excellent sun and the hardest residential solar math in the South. The installed price here runs $3.18 per watt, rank 46 of 51. There is no statewide net metering: Alabama Power buys exports at avoided-cost rates of roughly 3.05¢ to 4.93¢ per kWh depending on season and hour, charges solar homes a back-up capacity fee on top, and third-party leases and PPAs are prohibited. The numbers below price all three headwinds, and show the narrower set of Alabama households for whom solar still clears.

One geographic split matters before anything else: Alabama Power serves about 57% of the state’s homes, and the rules above are its rules. Much of north Alabama, including Huntsville’s municipal utility and many co-ops, buys power through TVA, whose distributors set their own solar terms. What the Big Systems Really Cost

Alabama homes are heavy users, 1,143 kWh a month on average against $187 bills, so typical systems are among the largest in the country: 9.95 kW at about $31,641 gross at the $3.18 benchmark (as of March 1, 2026). That array produces around 13,700 kWh a year in Huntsville-class sun. Produced and used on the spot, that power offsets the retail rate you would otherwise pay, modeled here at the 16.38¢ statewide average; sent to the grid, it earns a nickel or less. Alabama Power files its own residential rate, so ask for the figure on your bill before relying on any estimate. Every design decision follows from that gap.

The Payback Range

Even in the impossible best case, with every kilowatt-hour self-consumed and no fixed charges, 13,700 kWh at the 16.38¢ statewide average is worth about $2,245 a year, modeling to a 14-year floor against the typical cost. That floor runs on the statewide average, which is ranking context rather than a rate anyone pays; rerun it with the rate on your own bill. Real households export part of their production at avoided-cost rates and pay the back-up charge besides, so realistic paybacks in Alabama Power territory run meaningfully longer than that floor. We will not print a precise number a tariff this complex does not support; we will say plainly that Alabama Power territory is among the longest-payback solar markets in the country, and rising rates (3.91% a year over five years) close the gap only slowly.

Who Still Comes Out Ahead in Alabama

  • The all-day home with big daytime load. Home offices, pool pumps, daytime cooling on smart schedules: households that can push self-use high keep most production at full retail value.
  • Battery-first buyers. Storage converts would-be nickel exports into full-retail offset, which matters more here than nearly anywhere; it must still justify its own cost, but Alabama is its natural habitat.
  • TVA-distributor customers with favorable local programs. North Alabama’s terms differ by distributor and can beat Alabama Power’s; verify locally.
  • Backup-power buyers. If outage protection is the primary purchase and savings are secondary, the math above is context, not verdict.

Who Should Walk Away

Empty weekday homes with no load shifting and no battery budget; buyers counting on tax credits (the federal residential credit is $0 for host-owned systems whose installation is completed after December 31, 2025, and the PPA path around it is prohibited here); and anyone whose installer projects savings without naming Rate PAE, the back-up charge, or your actual utility. In Alabama, a proposal that skips those words is not a proposal; it is a screenplay.
