Written by Dean Mahmoud, CEO, and checked by Trevor Guilday, founder.Prices from the September 2026 Cost Index. TVA price as of October 2026. Updated October 19, 2026.
A typical Tennessee home system is 9.11 kW and costs about $28,970 in cash at $3.18 per watt. Before incentives it takes 21.9 to 34.2 years to pay for itself, depending on your power company. Most of the state has no net metering: TVA buys the power you send out at 3.112¢ per kWh in October 2026, less than a quarter of the 13.56¢ average price you pay, and pays each month, so nothing is left at year end.

Selling solar power to TVA: one price a month, one five-year contract
Almost every Tennessee home buys power from a local company that TVA supplies. That company connects your system. TVA buys the power you do not use, under its Dispersed Power Production program.
Your local power company connects you
You apply to connect before you buy equipment. NES and MLGW both say so.
It approves the connection. At MLGW, every option needs a second meter.
Except at NES and Kingsport Power, it does not credit your extra power on the bill.
TVA Dispersed Power Production 3.112¢ in October 2026
You sign a separate five-year contract with TVA.
TVA pays its avoided cost, a price it resets every month: 3.112¢ per kWh in October 2026.
TVA pays you each month by direct deposit, not as a credit on your power bill, so nothing is left over at year end.

The older TVA program has taken no new applicants since December 31, 2019.
Two ways to sell, two price plans
You can sell everything your panels make, or only the power your home does not use at that moment.
TVA offers one flat price for every kWh or a price by time of day. Both change every month.
Ask your power company or installer for this month’s TVA price letter. Some utility pages are out of date: Volunteer Energy Cooperative’s solar page still says TVA pays about 1.8¢.
Without a TVA contract, the power you send out earns nothing outside Nashville and Kingsport.
Tennessee solar payback by power company: 21.9 to 34.2 years
Each kWh you use at home as it is made saves your power company’s price. Each kWh sent to TVA earns 3.112¢ in October 2026, or nothing without a TVA contract. We print no single statewide figure: your power company and the TVA contract set the payback.

How we calculated this
Output: 9.11 kW × 1,358 kWh per kW = 12,371 kWh a year.
Home use: 66.2% of output, valued at your power company’s own 12-month price (EIA). The other 33.8% is the share sent to the grid as reported to EIA, not measured at the meter.
MLGW with a TVA contract: 8,191 kWh × 13.775¢ + 4,180 kWh × 3.112¢ = $1,128 + $130 = $1,258 a year. $28,970 ÷ $1,258 = 23.0 years.
MLGW without one: home use valued at 12.443¢ (13.775¢ less $15.10 a month in fixed charges) = $1,019, less the $172.80 a year solar charge = $846. $28,970 ÷ $846 = 34.2 years.
Kingsport Power: all 12,371 kWh at 10.717¢ (12.030¢ less the $16.43 monthly service charge) = $1,326 a year, 21.9 years. Middle Tennessee Electric without a TVA contract: home use at 10.923¢ after its $21.81 monthly basic charge, $895 a year, 32.4 years.
3.112¢ is TVA’s price for October 2026. It resets every month.
These figures count no upkeep and no rise in power prices.
Nashville Electric Service credits its own rate. We do not print an NES payback yet, while we check that rate against the NESolar Savings rules. The MLGW case with a TVA contract counts no MLGW monthly charge.
NES, MLGW and Kingsport Power: Tennessee power companies with their own solar terms
The name at the top of your electric bill decides what your extra solar power earns and what you pay to connect.
Nashville Electric Service (NES)
3.069¢ to 3.244¢ per kWh, plus fuel
NESolar Savings credits extra power on your bill: 3.069¢ June to September, 3.197¢ December to March, 3.244¢ in other months, plus TVA’s fuel cost that month. Open until the program reaches 10 MW in total.
Next: apply at least 60 days before the system starts, and get the current rate in writing.
Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW)
$14.40 a month for solar homes
No bill credit for extra power: it earns money only under a TVA contract. The Electric Service Availability charge comes to $172.80 a year, and MLGW says it can change.
Next: send MLGW’s application before you buy equipment. A repeat acceptance test costs $200.
Kingsport Power (AEP Appalachian Power)
Net metering
The one Tennessee utility TVA does not supply. Each kWh you send out cancels one you buy, for home systems up to 10 kW, or 15 kW with a licensed electric vehicle. Extra kWh roll forward but are never paid in cash.
Next: expect a $50 inverter inspection and proof of $100,000 liability insurance.

Why Tennessee has net metering only in Kingsport
Net metering means each kWh you send out cancels one kWh you buy. Power companies supplied by TVA buy their power from TVA, and their supply contracts do not let them buy power from anyone else, so they do not offer it. MLGW says extra power reaches its grid “without financial benefit” unless you also sign with TVA.
Kingsport Power’s net metering is open while all its net metered systems stay within 1% of the most power its Tennessee customers use at one moment. We read Tariff N.M.S. in the company’s current Tennessee tariff book (compiled November 1, 2025; the sheet took effect August 8, 2022) on October 19, 2026. It pays no compensation for extra power in a billing period.
Tennessee solar prices: $3.18 per watt, above the US average
The September 2026 benchmark is $0.29 above the $2.89 US average, 48th lowest of 51. These are modeled cash prices, not quotes we collected.

How we got these numbers
9.11 kW is modeled from neighboring states, because too few Tennessee homes have solar to measure a local median. Size yours to the power you use in daylight.
Output uses the Cost Index figure of 1,358 kWh per kW a year. Shade lowers it.
Kingsport Power caps net metering at 10 kW, or 15 kW with an electric vehicle. NESolar Savings needs a system that sends out no more in a year than your home uses.
A system you own gets no federal tax credit after December 31, 2025.
Tennessee’s two solar tax breaks both start with a TDEC certificate
Tennessee has no solar rebate and, with no individual income tax, no state tax credit. What it offers runs through one certificate from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC).
100%Sales tax exemption
On equipment that makes or stores power in a certified system. On $10,000 of equipment, the 7% state tax alone is $700.
12.5%Property value limit
Certified solar valued at no more than 12.5% of installed cost when first appraised: $3,621 at most on $28,970. Ask your county assessor.
$0State tax credit
Tennessee taxes no individual income. The Hall tax on interest and dividends ended for tax periods from January 1, 2021.
$0Federal tax credit
Not for a system you own placed in service after December 31, 2025.

Things sold as Tennessee incentives that are not
Green Power Providers: closed to new applicants since December 31, 2019. Today’s route is the TVA contract above.
Community solar in Nashville: Music City Solar had 12,863 panels left on October 1, 2026. At NES’s launch figures, a panel costs $166.63 plus fees and earns about $11.88 a year, so one bought now returns about $143 by 2038, less than its price.
Community solar elsewhere: Knoxville Utilities Board’s program has been full since August 2024, EPB’s Solar Share in Chattanooga is sold out, and MTE’s Cooperative Solar, at $20 a month per block, has a waiting list.
A battery: it qualifies for the sales tax exemption only if all the power it stores comes from clean sources, such as your own panels.

Tennessee Solar FAQs
Does Tennessee have net metering?
Only at Kingsport Power, for home systems up to 10 kW. Power companies supplied by TVA do not offer it. TVA buys your extra power at a price it resets every month, 3.112¢ per kWh in October 2026, and pays each month, so nothing is left at year end. Nashville Electric Service credits its own rate instead.
Does TVA pay a fixed price for the five-year contract?
No. The contract fixes the length, not the price. TVA sets a new price each month: 3.112¢ per kWh in October 2026. Ask for this month’s price letter before you compare quotes.
Is the Tennessee sales tax exemption automatic?
No. Someone has to email Form CN-1386 to TDEC so the system is certified. Your quote should say who. If tax was already paid, it can be refunded to whoever paid it.
Can I still join TVA’s Green Power Providers?
No. It has taken no new applicants since December 31, 2019. A new system sells extra power under Dispersed Power Production instead, or under NESolar Savings in Nashville.
Does Memphis charge solar homes extra?
Yes. MLGW bills homes that make their own power an Electric Service Availability charge of $14.40 a month, $172.80 a year, and says it can change. MLGW gives no bill credit for extra power.
