The Conditions That Make Rooftop Solar Work
Four things decide whether your roof is a good solar roof, and none of them is your address:
- Orientation. South-facing roof planes produce the most in the U.S.; east and west faces still work, typically with a modest production haircut. North-only roofs are the hard case.
- Shade. Trees, chimneys, and neighboring buildings matter more than latitude. A shade analysis of your actual roof beats any rule of thumb, and modern panel-level electronics recover a lot of partly shaded roofs.
- Roof age and structure. Panels outlast most roofing; a roof within 5-8 years of replacement should be handled first, and the framing must carry the added load, which the permit process checks.
- Usable area. The system that covers your usage has to physically fit after fire-code setbacks. Higher-efficiency panels shrink the footprint when space is tight.

A bad roof does not end the conversation when there is land or outbuildings. Ground-mounted systems trade yard space for ideal orientation and easy maintenance access, at the cost of trenching and usually zoning review. What is the best place to install solar panels?
An unshaded, south-facing roof plane in good condition is the classic best case, with east and west faces close behind. Where the roof fails, a ground mount pointed south usually beats forcing panels onto a bad roof. The best placement for your property comes from a shade analysis, not a compass alone.
Where should you not place solar panels?
On a roof within a few years of replacement, under meaningful shade without panel-level electronics, on north-only faces in most of the U.S., or anywhere the mounting cannot be properly attached and flashed. Each of those is fixable, reroof first, trim or route around shade, choose a different surface, but not ignorable.
Can I purchase solar panels and install them myself?
Legally, usually yes, and practically it fits small off-grid projects best. A grid-tied home system still needs permits, an inspection, and utility approval, and most warranties expect licensed installation. For the house you live in, professional installation protects the roof and the paperwork.
How much does it cost to install a solar panel?
