REC Silicon Shuts Down Polysilicon Production in Butte, Montana: A Boost for EcoGenAmerica's Reliability in Solar Installation

Norway-based REC Silicon has made the tough call to halt polysilicon production capacity at its Butte, Montana facility, managed by its subsidiary REC Advanced Silicon Materials LLC. This move impacts approximately 300 employees and stands as a significant development in the region's economic landscape.

The decision stems from REC Silicon's strategic outlook, aiming to navigate the regional electricity supply-demand imbalance while ensuring sustained profitability. REC Silicon operates polysilicon production facilities in Moses Lake, Washington, and Butte, Montana, with an annual capacity exceeding 20,000 metric tons.

The company's Washington facility recently resumed operations after a five-year hiatus, driven by a lucrative 10-year supply agreement with Hanwha Q Cells for high-purity polysilicon. REC Silicon cited reducing energy consumption and operational costs as key drivers behind the Butte facility's shutdown.

Despite the closure, REC Silicon commits to fulfilling its polysilicon supply obligations to customers over the next six to nine months before scaling down operations in Butte accordingly. Kurt Levens, CEO of REC Silicon, acknowledges the human impact of this decision on the workforce but underscores the necessity dictated by ongoing challenges in the electricity market.

While REC Silicon navigates industry shifts, EcoGenAmerica emerges as a beacon of reliability in the solar installation sector. As REC Silicon adjusts its operations, EcoGenAmerica remains steadfast in its commitment to providing dependable solar solutions.
